It only does 100 damage if you hit them early on and keep it applied. If they are at half health, DW will only do about half that in damage.

The reason I originally had [Whirlwind Attack] was for general AoE damage, other wise I found it unnecessary to base a build on AoE damage when more often then not I was fighting one target at a time. When I go up against a group of enemies, they scatter focusing on the weaker targets. Even when I am up against just one foe, I find I have to chase it down as it runs after squishies. I felt it was better to take one target at a time as fast as possible, rather then do AoE damage which will do pathetic damage to multiple foes that are so rarely grouped up. Now I, like most, use heroes. So there is a chance that I am flawed in my play style which is reflecting in my build choices.

20% of your max health (up to 100) will always be removed from your current health (if no other copy of DW is present). DW can't kill you though - if your health is reduced to 0 or under you will display 1 health.

You can test that (both things) in the islands with vamp weapon and then catching a DW from student of DW.

My question is still left unanswered.

About AoE damage vs single target?

Depends on the positioning of the forces.

You are a warrior - draw the aggro and try to body block their forces against a wall/corner/choke point. The AI is really stupid and can't sidestep or go around you.

In that case AoE wins hard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gekY7MWlyNg - This is an old video by someone showing how to farm faction with the blessings. You can see aggro and body block techniques here.

Now, in the case you can't body block single target damage is all the rave - one enemy at 10% health is as efficient as one at as 100% health (disregarding the over 50% clauses that PvE mobs don't have anyway). A dead enemy on the other hand isn't.

The ideal is having both.

The key to aggro control with hero+hench is flagging. You know they follow you pretty closely, so set a flag to keep them in place before entering aggro range. Monsters will look behind you for softer targets, so make sure the flag is far enough back that the only thing they will see is you. Once you have aggro, unflag the heroes to come fight with you and keep you alive. Of course you must have a build and armor that will allow you to survive long enough to gather the aggro before unflagging the hero+hench.

Also, learn how to body block. It isn't an easy thing to learn for some people, but it is quite effective. I always love when I see my hero Monk set on Avoid kite away from an enemy warrior and run around an NPC. Typically the monster will get stuck at the NPC even if it was an NPC they would have attacked. Their AI tells them to kill the target they were following, but they can't reach it, and are too stupid to move around what is blocking them. You can do the same thing, but you have to learn how.

Would that not include just tacking on [Whirlwind Attack]?

On your bar? Most likely. On a hammer you want [[crude swing] too and on a [[warriors endurance] add [[cyclone axe].

Other options for AoE your team should have are: [[mark of pain] and [[splinter weapon (pve)]

Depending on how many heroes/players your party have, slotting a [[strength of honor] on someone, like a orders dude will boost your dps (and of course the [[order of pain] and [[dark fury] of said orders dude will do it too)

I have been testing it in PvE and while 20% of your target's max health goes away, if he's below max, he seems to lose less red. Now that might be the 100 damage cap or not, just my experiences.

Toaster, crude swing can be used more often and does a little more damage. Remember hammers build Ade slower so a 6 ade skill for them is more like a 7 or 8 ade skill for axe or sword in terms of how long it takes you to build it up. Plus crude doesn't eat 1 ade off of all your other skills.

If you are having ade problems use crude, if you have energy problems use WA.

Just go to the Battle islands. Go to the students of conditions and degen urself with a vamp weapon or pick up bleeding/burning from the respective students. Go to 50% health or less. Then pick up DW from the DW student (if u go close to him you will get DW applied on u). You will see you current health dropping by 100 (or close depending on ur max health).

Alternatively do a skirmish.

For enemies with loads of life I don't know how the bar behaves - but they will lose 100, either when they are at 100% health or at 1% health.
